BASE Mystery Reader - Videostream Reading Sessions
As we continue to celebrate our BASE Staff members this week for Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week, we say “thank you” to them for going the extra mile and supporting our BASE Literacy Campaign this 2019-2020 school year. The staff found great ways to keep kids involved in reading, because reading is FUN! Thank you BASE Staff for all of the work you put in to helping kids read after school, keeping it fun and exciting, and helping them improve and practice their reading skills.
Our Mystery Reader today is Beth, BASE Rockwell Site Coordinator. Beth has brought an incredible amount of creativity and passion to the work that she does with the kids and her co-workers at BASE. It was very important for Beth to bring a sense of belonging to the kids at BASE Rockwell this school year and she did just that by engaging them in group sharing conversations, providing quality program and activity choices each afternoon, learning about each child and their needs, greeting the kids in fun ways when they entered the cafeteria for the afternoon, and being an active Site Coordinator playing, helping with homework and crafts, and talking with parents. Thank you Beth for your contributions at BASE, for inspiring kids and making a difference AND for taking the time to be a Mystery Reader today! Click on the picture below to listen to Beth read to you!
While we are excited for the day when we can return to face-to-face operations at our BASE sites where we will continue to invite community members to be a Mystery Reader at our sites, please consider becoming a part of our Mystery Reader videostream reading sessions.

LEADERSHIP - This is the 7th Home Chat provided by Growing Leaders, Opportunity Statue (Time Management). In ancient Greece, there was a statue called “Opportunity.” The statue had long flowing hair in the front and a bald head in back. Although it was a little strange, it was meant to teach a lesson: opportunity is something you can grab while it’s coming at you, but you can’t catch hold of it after it’s passed. This is why leaders manage opportunities. Everyone has 86,400 seconds each day to use or abuse. If you don’t use your time wisely you can’t get it back once it’s gone.

LEADERSHIP - Growing Leaders presents Home Chat #6: Filter or No Filter (Authenticity). Have you ever used a filter on social media to take a selfie? Our filters give us the ability to choose which version of ourselves we show the world. Sadly, many people pretend to be something they are not online. No one really knows them. Great leaders are authentic and honest about who they are, both online and offline. Why? Because our level of integrity is the true reflection of who we are.

Thank You Whitney for your ongoing commitment to our organization and the work that you do to make a difference in the lives of the BASE kids and families we serve!
While some of the FCCU team members had signed up to volunteer their time in April at our BASE sites to be Mystery Readers (April is also Financial Literacy Month), they jumped at the chance to share videostream reading sessions that they created and posted to their website to share with kids and families in the community. Thank you Olivia Reinke, Marketing Specialist at FCCU, for reaching out to us and allowing us to share these special videos on our Program Blog & BASE Kids Lab Literacy & Reading tab. Please enjoy these videostream reading sessions by Olivia Reinke and Robyn Newcomb, Chief Strategy Officer at FCCU!

LEADERSHIP - This is the 5th Home Chat provided by Growing Leaders, Homes & Apartments (Ownership) Do you know the difference between homes and apartments? Homes are something you own, and apartments are something you rent. Usually, we change our care of the places we live based on whether or not we own them. This is also true in life. People who treat their life like a home are more intentional and more responsible with their time. Don’t rent your circumstances, own them.

What Is Music To YOU?
Hello BASE Kids & Families!
It’s Miss Melissa, BASE Director of Operations continuing to ROCK OUT your daily family resource guides, adding awesome content to your BASE Kids Lab and preparing for our return to our after school and summer BASE programs.
Today I’m kicking off our BASE Staff Shares series. There are so many program topics and planned activities that your BASE Staff members love and share with you each day through after school and summer programs. One of the best things about BASE is that we can all bring a little about who we are and the things that we enjoy to BASE to share with others. It is a great way for all of us to have fun and learn new things together. You will continue to find BASE Staff Shares posted on our Facebook page, in the BASE Program Blog, and also in the BASE Kids Lab topic tab sections.
I wanted to share some fun and personal things with you about MUSIC. Music has always held a special place in my heart. I learned to play the flute, piano and violin growing up, and I sang in the St. Joseph’s Church children’s choir and adult choir, the Fort Atkinson High School choir, show choir, and high school musicals, and the UW-Milwaukee concert choir. My mother, my older brother Jason, my younger brother Brian, my niece Melody, and my sister-in-law Sarah also play instruments and sing. We sure kept our parents busy coming to all of our concerts and performances! My son Ethan and daughter Aubrey are also enjoying participating in choirs, musicals and playing instruments. I have been looking back at family pictures and videos and I’ll have to share some more of our family music moments as I come back to this music section of posts for you.
My husband Todd and I share a love of music. We enjoy attending rock concerts together. In fact, we put a picture of Todd’s favorite guitarist’s guitar, Zach Myers of the band Shinedown, on our wedding invitation. My sister-in-law Sarah is so artistic that she hand-painted a recreation of our wedding invitation for us as a wedding gift.
Todd and I were lucky enough to meet the band members of Shinedown before enjoying their concert from the front row in March 2019. It was an amazing experience! Do you have a favorite musician or band that you like to listen to? If you could meet a musician or a band, who would you want to meet?
I wanted to post this video below created by a rock band called Godsmack. They are in my list of favorite rock bands. They created a new song and music video called, “Unforgettable.” They included kids in this music video. You will hear kids talk about what music means to them. You will also hear the lead singer Sully Erna talk about the importance and power of music. Sully and the other members of the band teach the kids this new song and they perform it together. I hope you enjoy watching this video and rocking out to this song!
I will continue to post more about music and I encourage you to email any pictures or stories that you would like me to highlight in our BASE website Program Blog and also in the Arts & Music section or other sections of the BASE Kids Lab. Thanks for taking a musical journey with me and allowing me to share a little about what music is to me! melissa@basefortatkinson.org

BASE Mystery Reader-Videostream Reading Sessions
Our BASE Mystery Reader Videostream Reading Sessions are here! During the 2019-2020 school year BASE after school program we have focused time and attention on quality programs for kids. We brought enrichment to our literacy and reading program beginning with our Literacy in November campaign. Proceeds from our coffee, tea and hot chocolate sales went to purchase new books for our 4 BASE sites. BASE kids have enjoyed reading and sharing new books, BASE Kids of the Month have chosen their favorite books which were ordered and added to their BASE site’s library of books, reading tents and lounge chairs were purchased for all BASE sites, our Star Reading program continued on a daily basis, our BASE Kid Lab web page features online literacy and reading websites, and we invited members of our community to volunteer their time to come to BASE sites on Wednesday afternoons to read their favorite books to our BASE kids.
The COVID-19 pandemic that we are all experiencing sure has changed our daily operations and the face-to-face services we provide for our BASE kids and families. As we adjust to thinking outside of the box, connecting with our BASE kids, families and community in new ways, and striving to always fulfill our mission of providing quality, out of school care that will inspire our local youth, we are happy to introduce our BASE Mystery Reader Videostream Reading Sessions!
Our first BASE Mystery Reader highlighted in our videostream reading sessions is our BASE Executive Director, Alicia Norris.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, You Are A Leader,” John Quincy Adams. We are grateful for Alicia’s leadership at BASE every day. She dreams big, brings her artistic abilities, love of cooking and reading to our sites to share with the kids and staff, and never misses an opportunity to inspire others through her work. Thank you Alicia for all that you do for BASE and our community!
Please enjoy listening to Alicia as she reads for you! Click on the play button on the picture below to get started. Her videostream reading session can also be found on our BASE Kids Lab literacy & reading tab at www.basefortatkinson.org/literacy-reading along with others that will follow every Wednesday.
While we are excited for the day when we can return to face-to-face operations at our BASE sites where we will continue to invite community members to be a Mystery Reader at our sites, please consider becoming a part of our Mystery Reader videostream reading sessions.

LEADERSHIP-This is the 4th Home Chat from Growing Leaders: Fountains or Drains. Fountains and Drains have two opposite functions: fountains overflow with water while drains remove the water completely. In relationships with others, most people are usually a fountain or a drain — they either flow and overflow onto others, or they just drain people of their energy. My guess is that you’ve probably met both kinds of people. They either refresh the life in others or they dry it up. Driven by a positive attitude, great leaders focus on empowering people rather than exploiting them. You can also do these Add-on Activities as a family!

LEADERSHIP-These conversation starter guides enable you and your kids to discuss and build relevant leadership and life skills. This is the third Home Chat discussion starter resource provided by Growing Leaders. #3-Trade-Offs & Wise Choices. Have you ever come to a fork in a road? Once you decide which path to take you have to live with your decision. Every decision is a trade-off. Doing one thing means you can’t do another. It’s an important reminder for life: you can do anything, but you can’t do everything. In deciding what you’ll do, you also choose what not to do. That’s why taking time to make a wise choice is so important.
STEM-Use this website to search for STEM projects. We feature this website on our BASE Kids Lab under our STEM tab and it is being featured and shared by professionals and parents.
